1. Choosing the Right Timelapse Camera
Choosing a timelapse camera usually comes down to three things: how long the project runs, how easy it is to access the site, and what you need the final footage for.
Most problems happen when people pick a camera based on specs like resolution or price, rather than how the project actually behaves in the real world.
Start with project duration
The first thing to figure out is how long the camera needs to run.
- If it’s under 6 months, a compact battery-powered camera will usually do the job.
- If it’s 6–24 months or longer, you’ll almost always need external power or solar.
- If it’s a long-term or critical site, remote access becomes less of a nice-to-have and more of a requirement.
The longer the project runs, the more things you need to plan for: battery life, storage limits, and maintenance visits.
Then think about access..
This one gets overlooked all the time.
- If you can visit the site regularly (weekly or monthly), compact systems are fine.
- If access is difficult, like rooftops, highways, or remote infrastructure, you really want remote access.
- If you can’t reliably get back to the camera at all, then remote monitoring isn’t optional—it’s the only sensible option.
Finally, what are you using the footage for?
This changes the type of camera more than people expect.
- Internal reporting or site updates → standard HD is fine
- Client presentations or marketing → higher resolution matters
- Anything that needs editing flexibility → you want access to the raw image sequence
The source images always decide how flexible the final video will be.
Simple way to decide
If you want a quick rule of thumb:
- Can you visit the site regularly? → go compact
- Can’t reliably visit? → go remote access
- Long project + important output? → remote + solar setup
2. Capture Interval (The Setting That Controls Everything)
The capture interval is just the time between each photo.
So if you set a 5-minute interval, the camera takes one image every five minutes.
But this one setting quietly controls almost everything else: battery life, storage usage, and how smooth the final video looks.
What actually works in the real world
- 1–2 minutes → fast-moving activity (cranes, demolition, short bursts of work)
- 3–5 minutes → standard construction projects (up to ~6 months)
- 5–10 minutes → longer builds (6–24 months)
- 15+ minutes → slow-change projects like infrastructure or environmental monitoring
Here’s the trade-off
Short intervals give you more detail, but they come at a cost:
- more images
- faster battery drain
- higher storage use
Long intervals do the opposite:
- less data
- longer runtime
- slightly less smooth motion
The most common mistake
Most people set the interval too short.
It feels safer, but it usually leads to:
- storage filling up early
- battery dying faster than expected
- unnecessary maintenance visits
Simple rule
If you’re unsure, go slightly longer.
You can always shorten it later—but you can’t recover missed time or dead batteries.
3. Scheduling Capture (When the Camera Should Work)
Scheduling just means controlling when the camera actually takes photos.
This is especially useful on construction sites where nothing happens overnight or at weekends.
A typical setup
- Every 5 minutes
- 9am–5pm
- Monday to Friday
That alone can cut your image count dramatically without losing useful footage.
Why it matters
Scheduling isn’t just about tidiness—it directly affects:
- battery life

If the camera isn’t capturing unnecessary hours, everything lasts longer.
More advanced setups
Some systems let you get more granular:
Dual schedules
- Different intervals at different times of day
